W.900 DISINFECTION AND TESTING OF WATER MAINS
- CHLORINATION
- It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to provide a chlorine residual of not less than 50 mg/liter in every part of the new construction. This residual shall remain in the system for not less than 24 hours before flushing and testing. The chlorine used must be water works quality and approved by the National Sanitation Foundation.
- CHARGING
- The Contractor shall notify the Water Department to request charging of the lines, which shall only be done by Water Department employees. The Contractor shall provide 24 hours notice to the Water Department.
- PRESSURE TESTING
- The Contractor shall provide a pressure test of 150 p.s.i. for two hours on all new construction. Allowable leakage shall be based on the following formula:
 where L = allowable leakage in gallons per hour, S = length of pipe in feet, D = diameter of pipe in inches, and P = average test pressure. The Water Department shall witness all pressure tests. The Water Department requires a minimum of two days notice prior to the test. See Chart W.900.3.
- SAMPLING
- The Water Department shall determine the number and location of sampling points to be used. The Water Department shall be responsible for collection and testing of bacteria samples required. In no instances shall fire hydrants be used for sampling.
- Any additional work or materials needed to achieve satisfactory test results shall be provided by the Contractor.
- CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE
- The Contractor must meet all requirements as listed above. In addition, the Contractor shall provide a set of "AS-BUILT" drawings to the Water Department. These drawings must contain the following information: size and length of main, location of main in right-of-way, two dimensional locations of all valves, and location of all fittings on the main. Also, all valves must be operational with boxes flush with and visible at finished grade. Acceptance of new mains shall be granted by the Board of Water Works Trustees based upon the recommendation of the Water Superintendent.
