STANDARD SPECIFICATIONSTABLE OF CONTENTS

W.710 MATERIALS FOR WATER MAINS

  1. GENERAL
    1. All materials must be new and unused.
    2. All materials must meet applicable American Water Works Association Standards and be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation.
    3. Items listed are approved by the Water Department and may change from time to time, keep current. All materials are subject to approval by the Plymouth Water Department.

  2. PIPE
    1. All pipe four (4) inches and larger shall be ductile iron, minimum pressure class of 350, cement lined with a bituminous coating. All ductile iron pipe shall be of the bell and spigot type, with push on joints. Lubricant for gaskets shall be water works quality in a clean, clearly marked container.
    2. Service lines two (2) inches or smaller shall be copper, Type K below grade and Type L above ground.
    3. In no cases shall materials three (3) inches in diameter be permitted on any City mains, valves or apparatus.

  3. FITTINGS
    1. All necessary fittings and couplings for four (4) inch or larger pipe shall be cast iron with a bituminous coating. All fittings shall be mechanical joint type with retainer glands to restrict pipe movement.
      1. All mechanical joint connections shall be furnished with joint restraint. Approved methods for restraint include: Wedge action retainer glands with break away bolts to insure proper torque (Uni-flange series 1400 or Equal), or a locking split ring with a mechanical joint follower gland ( Romac Grip Ring or equal).
    2. All necessary fittings for two (2) inch or smaller pipe shall be pack-joint fittings of water works brass and meet AWWA standards.

  4. VALVES
    1. All four inch and larger valves shall be resilient seated wedge valves with mechanical joint and retainer gland, epoxy coating, non-rising stem, and standard two inch operating nut. All valves shall open left. Valve boxes shall be of the two piece, cast iron, screw adjustable design with a plug type lid marked "WATER". Valve boxes shall be sized to allow for height adjustment.

  5. HYDRANTS
    1. All hydrants shall be the traffic safety type that can be extended. Hydrants shall have a six inch mechanical joint inlet with retainer gland, 5.25" main valve opening, one - 4.5" and two - 2.5" outlets with National Standard threads, and a pentagon operating nut that opens left. Hydrant color shall be safety yellow. Hydrants are to be equal to Kennedy Valve model K - 81A. Hydrants shall open counter-clockwise.
