W.105 WATER MAIN DESIGN

  1. DESCRIPTION

All water mains shall be placed according to the City of Plymouth Specifications and Design Standards, INDOT Specifications, ISDH, IDEM and all applicable AWWA requirements.

  2. DESIGN CRITERIA
    1. All mains shall be ductile iron with a minimum nominal diameter of six (6) inches. Pipe diameters other than 6", 8", 12" and 16" must have written permission from the superintendent before plans and drawings are approved.
    2. Valves shall be placed at a maximum distance of 800 feet apart, measured along the center line of the main.
    3. Valves shall be placed at each outlet of all junctions.
    4. Hydrants shall be placed a maximum of 500 feet apart, and 250 feet maximum from any structure. The Water Department Superintendent, the Fire Chief, and the Water Board, jointly, shall have the authority to require additional hydrants as they deem necessary for public safety. All hydrants shall have a six (6) inch auxiliary valve and box associated with it.
    5. Plans must be approved by the Water Department and documents submitted and approved through IDEM's permit process.
    6. Water lines shall be laid at least ten (10) feet horizontally from any existing or proposed sewer. The distances shall be measured edge to edge.
In circumstances where restrictions prevent 10' separation, this distance may be reduced provided the sewer is constructed of materials specified for water mains as per IAC 327 and approved by both the Water and Sewer Superintendents as well as the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
    7. Water mains crossing sewers shall be laid to provide a minimum vertical distance of eighteen (18) inches between the outsides of the sewer pipe and water main. This shall be the case where the water main is either above or below the sewer. The crossing shall be arranged so the sewer joints will be equidistant and as far as possible from the water main. Where a water main crosses a sewer, adequate structural support shall be provided to prevent damage to the water main or sewer.
    8. The Contractor shall furnish three (3) sets of cut sheets from the manufacturer for all products, valves, hydrants etc.
    9. All water mains shall maintain a minimum depth of five (5) feet below the finished grade. Exceptions to this shall be approved by the Water Department Superintendent together with the Water Board.
