WW.720 MANHOLE SPECIFICATIONS

  1. LOCATION
    1. Manholes shall be installed at the end of each line, at all changes in grade, size, or alignment, at all intersections, at distances not greater than 400 feet (120 M) for sewers fifteen (15) inches or less, at distances not greater than 500 feet (150 M) for sewers eighteen (18) to thirty (30) inches at distances up to 600 feet is approved due to special circumstances. Cleanouts are not permitted on main lines.

  2. DROP TYPE MANHOLES
    1. A drop pipe shall be provided for a sewer entering a manhole at an elevation of twenty-four (24) inches or more above the manhole invert. Where the difference in elevation between the incoming sewer and the manholes invert is less than twenty-four (24) inches, the invert should be filleted to prevent solids deposition.
    2. Drop manholes shall be constructed with an outside connection. An inside connection shall be used only in accordance with direction provided by the City Representative.
    3. Due to the unequal earth pressures that would result from the backfilling operations in the vicinity of the manhole, the entire outside drop connection shall be encased in concrete. Inside drop connections shall be anchored every three (3) feet by stainless steel anchors and or strapping. A minimum of two (2) anchor points are required.

  3. DIAMETER
    1. The minimum diameter of manholes shall be forty-eight (48) inches for sewers of eighteen (18) inch diameter or less. For sewers larger than eighteen (18) inches and equal to or less than thirty-six (36) inches, the minimum diameter shall be seventy-two (72) inches. A minimum access diameter of twenty-two (22) inches shall be provided.

  4. MANHOLE DESIGN
    1. Manholes shall be of the pre-cast concrete type. Manholes shall be waterproofed on the exterior upon City Representative's request. All manhole joints shall be tongue and groove, sealed with a joint sealer similar to "RAM-NEK" as manufactured by K. T. Snyder Co., Houston, TX or approved equal. Inlet and outlet pipes shall be joined to the manhole with a gasketed, flexible, watertight, connection arrangement that allows differential settlement of the pipe and manhole wall to take place. The flow channel through the manhole shall be made to conform in shape and slope to that of the sewers to which it connects. All connections, lift holes, or imperfections inside the manhole shall be grouted smooth, including connection areas where pipe enters the manhole interior.
    2. Watertight manhole covers shall be used wherever the manhole is designated sanitary manhole. Locked manhole covers may be desirable in isolated locations or where vandalism may be a problem.
    3. Manhole bases and adjusting rings shall be of pre-cast concrete. Manholes shall be furnished with corrosion resistant steps. Adjusting ring may not exceed ten (10) inches in total height.
    4. Manholes must be made watertight at all points and if, after the work is completed, leaks are discovered, they must be caulked or otherwise stopped. Upon completion of the work, manholes are to be left clean and free from rubbish and kept so until acceptance of the work.

  5. MANHOLE DESIGN
    1. Castings shall be:
      1. Neenah HD R-1772-C with solid lid and two (2) concealed pick holes, or:
      2. East Jordan 1022-1 with heavy duty cover.
    2. Cast into the cover shall be the appropriate words, "SANITARY SEWER" or "STORM SEWER".
